Recognition
Zero Waste SA's work as a leader in waste management is recognised locally, nationally and internationally. International recognition was reflected in the UN-HABITAT publication Solid Waste Management in the World's Cities, and enhanced when the successful plastic bag ban campaign received an International Association of Business Communicators Gold Quill award for Communications Management.
Food waste pilot
Results of the household food waste recycling pilot in South Australian10 councils have demonstrated that higher levels of recycling at the kerbside are attainable. The pilot achieved diversion rates of up to 71% and market research showed strong householder support for food waste recycling. Results from the pilot have informed the development of a new incentives program and are summarised in a final report (PDF).
Zero Waste SA and UniSA research partnership
The University of South Australia's Zero Waste SA Centre for Sustainable Design and Behaviour, is working to promote 'a vision of a resource recovery society – doing more with less'. The research project Zero-ing in on Food Waste: Measuring, understanding and reducing food waste in South Australia from production to consumption in households and restaurants is a major collaborative initiative which addresses consumption and waste avoidance.
