Waste Levy

The Waste to Resources Fund is made up primarily of 50% of the levy paid by waste depot licence holders under the Environment Protection Act 1993.

The levy is collected by the Environment Protection Authority, and a portion is transferred to the Waste to Resources Fund, which Zero Waste SA draws on to achieve its objectives.

An increase in the solid waste levy has been foreshadowed in the 2010-11 State Budget. The levy will increased from 2011-12 as follows:

  • metropolitan Adelaide - from $26 a tonne to $35 a tonne
  • mon-metropolitan Adelaide - from $13 a tonne to $17.50 a tonne.

Further increases after 2011-12 are also foreshadowed up to at least $50 a tonne in metropolitan Adelaide. These increases:

  • reflect the State Government's aim to meet the South Australia Strategic Plan target of a 35% reduction of waste to landfill by 2020
  • support the stretch targets in South Australia's Waste Strategy for the next five years.

At the direction of the Minister for Environment and Conservation Zero Waste SA is undertaking a review of the waste levy in consultation with key stakeholders. The Board of Zero Waste SA has formed a Board committee to assist with the review.
