JamFactory and Zero Waste SA

Turning waste into art

Staff and associates at the contemporary craft and design centre had formed a Green Team to identify ways to improve recycling, and cut down on water and energy use.

Membership, drawn from across the centre, includes artists from the glass, ceramics, furniture and metal studios. "Being creative people we had no shortage of good ideas but too often we were told by outside 'experts' that they weren't possible," says Green Team member and glass specialist Deb Jones.
"That is until we joined the Zero Waste SA REAP program and discovered that they were possible – we just needed pointing in the right direction." With the support of REAP (Resource Efficiency Assistance Program), the Green Team has been responsible for various initiatives to reduce JamFactory's environmental footprint.

Now they are using their artistic talents to eliminate another waste stream. A design challenge has been launched to turn broken glazed ceramics and coloured glass into new artworks.
