Results of Collections

Stage 1- Collection 1 - Onkaparinga

The first collection was undertaken at two locations within the Onkaparinga Council area on Saturday 27 March 2004 from 10am - 3pm.

Nearly 20 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste was received from 649 residents.

The top three materials received were paint (6.6 tonnes), waste oil (6.6 tonnes) and lead acid batteries (3.5 tonnes).

Other wastes included pesticides, fertilisers, solvents, arsenic compounds, acids, alkalis and a range of products in aerosol spray cans.

Stage 1- Collection 2 - West Torrens

The second collection was held at the Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre located within the City of West Torrens on Saturday 1 May 2004 from 9am - 3pm.

Three hundred and eighty nine people delivered 15.4 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste to the collection site.

The top three materials received were paint (6784 kg), waste oil (3958 kg) and batteries (1460.5 kg).

Other wastes included solvents, pesticides, fertilisers, arsenic and cyanide compounds, aerosols and corrosives.

Stage 1- Collection 3 - Marion

Our third collection is now completed having taken place in the City of Marion Council area on Saturday 22 May 2004 from 10am - 3pm.

Seven hundred and one people utilised the service and delivered 20.5 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste to the Council's Works Depot on Marion Road Mitchell Park.

As with the two previous collections the top three materials received were paint (7599 kg), waste oil (6963 kg) and lead acid batteries (2393 kg)

Other wastes included acids, alkalis, pesticides and fertilisers.

Stage 1- Collection 4 - Unley

Our final collection in the Stage 1 (pilot ) program was held in the City of Unley on the 26 June 2004. 212 people delivered 5.9 tonnes of unwanted chemicals to the Leader Pavilion at the Royal Adelaide Showgrounds. The top three wastes received were paint, waste oil and lead acid batteries. Other wastes included solvents, pesticides, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals.

Total Results for Stage 1 (pilot) Program

Stage 1 consisting of 4 metropolitan Councils is now completed. In total 1953 people took advantage of the free program and delivered 61.7 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste to the collection points.

Stage 2 - Collection 1 Northern Eyre Peninsula and Whyalla

The first collection was undertaken at 4 locations within the Council areas of Kimba, Cleve, Franklin Harbour and Whyalla.

Stage 2 - Collection 2 - Campbelltown

Our second collection is now completed having been undertaken in the Campbelltown City Council area on Saturday 14 August 2004 between 10am and 3pm.

Four hundred and forty people delivered 13.98 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste to the Council Works Depot at Newton Road Campbelltown.

The top three wastes were paint (7049 kg), waste oil (3140kg) and lead acid batteries (993kg). Other wastes collected included solvents, pesticides and corrosives.

Stage 2 - Collection 3 - Charles Sturt

The third collection in Stage 2 is now completed with 6.63 tonnes of unwanted household hazardous waste being delivered by 196 people to the City of Charles Sturt Council Works Depot, 66 East Avenue Beverley on the 18 September 2004.

The top three wastes received from the public were waste paint (2179.5 kg), waste oil (1336.5 kg) and lead acid batteries (1526 kg).

Other wastes included flammable liquids, garden chemicals, coolant and detergents.

Stage 2 - Collection 4 - Prospect

217 people delivered 6.9 tonnes of unwanted chemicals to the collection held in the City of Prospect Council area on 16 October 2004.Wastes received on the day included waste paint (solvent and water based), waste oil, lead acid batteries, solvents and pesticides.

Stage 2 - Collection 5 - Kangaroo Island

A collection was held on Kangaroo Island during 1 - 3 November 2004. Two collection sites were established at Kingscote and Penneshaw for residents to drop off their unwanted hazardous materials. 50 people delivered 3.5 tonnes over the three day period.The top two wastes were lead acid batteries (1947 kg) and pesticides ( 1142 kg). Other wastes included flammable liquids, acids, detergents and oxidisers.

Stage 2 - Collection 6 - City of Port Adelaide Enfield

The first collection for 2005 was undertaken at two locations within the Council area of Port Adelaide Enfield.

21.4 tonnes of unwanted chemicals were received from 566 residents. The top three wastes delivered to the collection points were waste paint (9 tonnes), waste oil (4.8 tonnes) and lead acid batteries (3.8 tonnes). Other wastes included solvents, pesticides, corrosives, pharmaceuticals and fertilisers.

Stage 2 - Collection 7 - Lower North

Collections in the lower north of the State are now completed with 15 collection points being established in 6 Council areas.

39.4 tonnes of unwanted materials was received from 418 residents. The top three wastes received were, waste oil (15887.5 kg), pesticides (6421.5 kg including 938 kg of organochlorine pesticides) and lead acid batteries (5753.5 kg).

Other wastes included arsenic compounds, fertilisers, strychnine, corrosives and solvents.

Stage 2 - Collection 8 (Upper South East)

The collection in the upper South East is now completed with 12.2 tonnes
of waste being received at 5 locations within the 3 Council areas of
Kingston, Robe and Tatiara.

The top three wastes received were pesticides, lead acid batteries and
waste oil. Other materials delivered to the collection points included
fertilisers, arsenic compounds, solvent based paint and flammable liquids.

Stage 2 - Collection 9 City of Playford
The collection in the City of Playford resulted in 8.9 tonnes of unwanted
materials being delivered by 220 people to the Davoren Park collection
point.
Top three wastes were waste paint ( 3965.5 kg), waste oil (2593 kg) and lead
acid batteries ( 983kg). Other wastes received on the day included flammable
liquid, pesticides, coolant, pharmaceuticals and oxidisers.

Stage 2 - Collection 10 Town of Gawler
125 people delivered 5.65 tonnes of unwanted chemicals to the Willaston
collection point within the Town of Gawler. Top three wastes received from
the public were waste paint (2229 kg), waste oil (1426 kg) and lead acid
batteries (742 kg). Other wastes collected included corrosives, flammables,
pesticides (including organochlorine pesticides), and fertilisers.

Stage 2 - Collection 11 City of Salisbury
The collection in the City of Salisbury netted 11.59 tonnes of unwanted
household hazardous waste. Top three wastes received from 260 people were
waste paint (5090 kg), waste oil (2820.5 kg) and lead acid batteries ( 1294
kg). Other wastes delivered to the Pooraka collection point included
pesticides, corrosives, flammables, aerosol cans and oxidisers.

Stage 2 - Collection 12 Riverland
Collections in the Riverland are now completed with 23.38 tonnes of waste
being received at 6 locations within the 3 Council areas of Beeri Barmera,
Loxton Waikerie and Renmark Paringa. The top three wastes received were
waste oil (8616 kg), lead acid batteries (4852 kg ) and pesticides (4016.5
kg). Other materials delivered by the public included fertilisers,
fumigants, corrosives, detergents and strychnine.
