Food waste business case – Zero Waste SA
In 2007 Zero Waste SA commissioned JAC Comrie Pty Ltd to develop a business case for Councils to undertake co-collection of food waste with garden organics. The report provides a comprehensive understanding of the cost and other implications for introducing co-collection of food and garden organic waste.
Co-Collection of Domestic Food Waste and Garden Organics – The Australian Experience
This report prepared by the NSWDepartment of Environment and Conservation NSW (March 2007) provides a summary of food waste co-collection trials undertaken throughout Australia. Full reports of trials are referenced in the report and are generally freely available on-line.The report notes that an essential component of all trials and services has been a comprehensive and well-resourced educational campaign.
Burnside Council SA - food waste survey
A trial collection of food organics carried out by Burnside Council in 2005-2006 demonstrated that it is technically viable to undertake such a collection. Food scraps were put into compostable bags fitted into a plastic ventilated basket. When full, the bags were placed in the green organics bin for composting. A survey of residents by Truscott Research indicated a high level of support for such a service.
Chifley, ACT - household organic material collection trial
The ACT Government has a policy of No Waste By 2010. This report
documents the Chifley household organic material collection trial designed to help determine whether an organic collection service is able to effectively separate organics into a stream for reprocessing as another step towards No Waste in the ACT.
Coffs Harbour City Council, NSW - domestic waste trial
The report details the findings from a trial which tested different systems based on the weekly collection of organics and fortnightly alternate collection of
residual waste and recycling. Further elements were examined for multi-unit dwellings.
Shellharbour City Council, NSW - fortnightly residual waste collection
Shellharbour City Council has introduced a fortnightly residual waste collection service together with weekly garden and organics collection. The service is described in this fact sheet.
