Zero Waste SA Showcase Projects

Here you can find links to showcase information on various projects Zero Waste SA have funded and the outcomes achieved in areas like as recycling and reprocessing systems, litter prevention as well as research, development and education

Integrated Waste Services – organics and timber drop-off facility.

amcor_paperA dedicated garden organics and timber drop-off facility has been installed by Integrated Waste Services (IWS) to complement its existing kerbside Material Recovery Facility.
Zero Waste SA contributed $95,000 towards the facility which will enable the sorting of an extra 12,000 tonnes of organic and timber waste annually. Previously all of this material ended up in landfill.

LF Jeffries Nominees Pty Ltd - garden organics processing

A $240,000 grant has been provided to LF Jeffries Nominees Pty Ltd to purchase new industrial equipment which will reduce contamination of garden organics being processed for mulch.

The equipment will result in a cleaner product, increased processing efficiency and increased product sales.
Jeffries receives and processes more than 70,000 tonnes of recyclable organics each year. These materials include garden organics collected from council kerbside collections and garden maintenance contractors. Jeffries also recycles some 8,000 tonnes of timber waste in pallets, crates and boxes.

granulatingPlastics Granulating Services – consumer and industrial waste plastic capacity upgrade

Plastics Granulating Services (PGS) is the largest processor of post-consumer and post-industrial waste plastics in South Australia.

A Zero Waste SA grant of $250,000 has enabled PGS to provide a second life for low quality disposed plastic waste products such as packing waste, used agricultural pipe and silage waste.

The recycled resin is being used to produce irrigation pipe, packaging films and moulded products.

The project is diverting 6,000 tonnes of packaging waste previously going to landfill.

RoadworksResourceco – recycled asphalt product trials

Currently Resourceco receive approximately 100 000 tonnes per annum of reclaimed asphalt and pavement material which is recycled by crushing and screening to produce a quality assured granular pavement product BITUMATE.

Zero Waste SA provided a grant of $100,000 to enable a extensive field trials at Resourceco’s Wingfield facility Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

Bitumate is gaining acceptance within the recycled asphalt market and has been adopted by numerous regional councils. Some of the more prominent projects have been undertaken by the District Council of Mt Barker, City of Playford, and AusBulk South Australia’s premier grain handler.

Foodbank SA

LeighroyansandStephenEagle eyes in Zero Waste SA for spotting opportunities to reduce waste to landfill and a cold call to local charity Foodbank SA uncovered a significant silent achiever in the fight to reduce food waste. Foodbank SA rescues hundreds of tonnes of edible food destined for landfill and diverts it to welfare programs across the state to help feed the needy.

Foodbank SA’s current food distribution centre at Edwardstown was running at 100% capacity and it had to lease a neighbouring warehouse to increase its storage – and thus recovery – of food.

Zero Waste SA has provided a grant of $50,000 which will be used to fit-out the new storage space with  shelving and a second-hand forklift for materials handling.

Alternative Fuel Company – better shredder

Combustible material usually destined for landfill is being used as fuel in Adelaide Brighton Limited’s cement kiln.

The Alternative Fuel Company’s investment in a new shredder is increasing the volume of material processed into fuel from 50,000 to 100,000 tonne per annum.

A grant of $250,000 from Zero Waste SA is enabling a wide range of materials to be processed and will improve the efficiency of the shredding operation. The alternative fuel will conserve the amount of natural gas used and reduce CO2 emissions by using predominantly biomass fuel to replace fossil fuel.

Peat Soils - Komtech L3 Sorter

peatsOften metals and plastics in the organic waste stream collected in the kerbside recycling process can result in large amounts of organic material being unusable.

To combat this problem Zero Waste SA provided Peats Soils with a grant of $300,000 to purchase equipment (a Komptech L3 sorter), to sort and remove contamination from organic waste collected from kerbside recycling in South Australia.

This increases the efficiency of recycling organics significantly and with this powerful new addition to their plant Peats Soils aim to increase their organics processing from 80,000 tonnes a year to 160,000 tonnes a year.
