Zero Waste SA School and Community Grants Showcase

Tulka Trailer

Tulka Progress Association
The purchase of a trailer with a contribution from Zero Waste SA of $7,300 has been a major event for the small town of Tulka, located near Pt Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula. Without a local recycling facility, the Tulka Progress Association banded together to raise funds for a trailer which enables residents to transport their recyclable materials to the recycling centre at Port Lincoln.

Port Julia

Port Julia Progress Association
The Port Julia Progress Association needed a lockable, weather proof shed to improve the storage and sorting of recyclables collected from residents as well as enabling a wider range of materials to be collected. Zero Waste SA funded the construction of the recycling and storage shed. Previously recycling, sorting and storage was done in the Port Julia Progress Association meeting hall across the road. After construction of a shed with $6,875 from Zero Waste SA the Association freed up enough space to build a new kitchen in their meeting hall, much to the delight of members who were previously using a stove from the 1950s held closed with a broom handle!

Karoonda Lions Club

Lions Club of Karoonda & District Inc
The Lions Club of Karoonda wanted to improve their existing recycling facility to better serve the local community. Originally using an old wool baler to crunch cardboard and paper, Zero Waste SA's grant of $12,600 contributed to the cost of extensions to the shed and provided a mechanical waste compacter to crush, bale and bind cardboard, cans and tins. The volunteers at the Lions Club transport recyclable materials to Murray Bridge every week, injecting any profits back into the local community.

Yorketown Porgress Association

Yorketown Progress Association
When the Yorketown Progress Association were told they would have to vacate the premises where they had used for recycling for four years, they knew they had to maintain the service for residents. Zero Waste SA's funding of $28,567 contributed to the establishment of a dedicated recycling shed, purchase of a mechanised cardboard baler and two trailers to enable the collection of cardboard, paper, plastic and other recyclable materials. The 'Sort n Save' shed is staffed by dedicated volunteers who contribute to the sustainability of the Yorketown region.

Marion Bay

Marion Bay Township Committee
When the Marion Bay Township Committee began an education campaign for residents and visitors recycling increased ten-fold. To handle this increase Zero Waste SA's grant of $14,080 contributed towards the cost of upgrading to the existing recycling shed and facilities. Marion Bay has a safer workspace for community volunteers to carry out recycling.

James Well and Rogues Point Progresss Association

James Well and Rogues Point Progress Association Inc
Seventy five per cent of residents in the small community of James Well are temporary holiday makers. The long term residents realised they needed to provide a better system for collection and storage of recyclable material, not only to protect their pristine environment but also to improve the quality of life for residents in the small coastal town. Zero Waste SA's grant of $12,282 contributed to the construction of a shed for the collection, storage and sorting of recyclable materials.

Gladstone Seniors

Gladstone Senior Citizens
The residents of Gladstone were eager to improve the options for recycling in their town. Zero Waste SA helped to fund a mechanised baler and a paper and cardboard lifter with a grant of $8,250 to make the work of volunteers from the Gladstone Senior Citizens easier and allow better storage and sorting in the old Gladstone Butter Factory that houses the recycling centre.

Orroroo

Orroroo Area School
After attending a Zero Waste SA Wipe Out Waste workshop, teachers and students from the Orroroo Area school wanted to expand on their recycling program to help the people of Orrorro recycle cardboard, paper and glass. Zero Waste SA provided $15,000 to fund skips, recycling bins for the main street, wire sorting cages and a recycling trailer to enable the community to improve their recycling and save on the cost of sending valuable material to landfill.
