Recyclable Resources - Paper, Cardboard, Cans, Cartons, Glass, Plastics, Toner Cartridges, Mobile Phones
All agencies should be recycling materials for which recycling services are readily available and accessible and which are free or cost-neutral.
In liaison with building managers, cleaning and waste/recycling contractors and other stakeholders as applicable, agencies should establish effective recycling systems for:
- paper (all paper, including white, coloured, newspaper, magazines, confidential paper)
- cardboard
- comingled (non-deposit containers, including glass and plastic containers, aluminium and steel cans, cartons)
- toner cartridges (printer and photocopier)
- deposit containers (all beverage containers redeemable in South Australia)*
- mobile phones
Apart from the kind of recyclables like those also collected at the kerbside, there are a number of Additional Materials which can be considered for recycling.
* The range of deposit containers has also been expanded - many worksites may wish to collect and manage their own 5c containers and use the funds for drinks, a Christmas party, BBQ or donate it to charity.
Collection & Costs
A range of providers offer collection systems for these 'garden variety' recyclables, including paper (white, colour, glossy, newspapers), cardboard, plastics, confidential waste, glass, cans, cartons, deposit containers. Check 'Recycling Services' in the Yellow Pages and Implementing a Waste Management System.
Ask providers about current costs, which may vary depending on location and amount of material for collection. There may be no direct cost to the agency where the contractual arrangement is between the recycler and cleaning company. Also ensure the types and level of service offered meets the work site requirements.
Ideally, the goal should be a system where the most materials can be accepted using the least number of collection bins and contractors. The types of materials (especially plastics) which can be accepted may vary from provider to provider.
Establishing effective, comprehensive recycling systems will require liaison with asset/facility/accommodation managers, business services staff, building owners/managers, cleaners, contractors, and other tenants where relevant to ensure that there is sufficient space for recycling bins, that recycling contractors have access to the collection area and that the systems are functioning as intended.
