Adelaide Convention Centre and Zero Waste SA

A path to environmental sustainability

Adelaide Convention Centre is on a green crusade. Not satisfied with a wide ranging program to improve its own environmental credentials, the centre has introduced initiatives encouraging sustainability among its customers.

The leadership role is inspiring staff and other centres, and earning Adelaide Convention Centre international recognition through prestigious awards.

As part of Zero Waste SA's Industry Program, the centre has had its waste audited and its performance assessed by an Energetics business diagnostic that scores a range of sustainability issues. For an organisation undertaking the diagnostic for the first time, the centre rated well. The centre has registered with Green Globe, an international sustainability benchmarking program for the travel and tourism sector. In 2008 the centre achieved bronze certification and in July 2009 it was the first convention centre in Australia to be awarded Green Globe silver certification.

Green focus for inaugural wine festival

By placing waste avoidance and recycling high on the agenda for its inaugural Cellar Door Wine Festival - Adelaide, Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) set the benchmark high in another example of environmental leadership.

With Zero Waste SA on hand to provide support, the centre succeeded in keeping waste to a minimum through some careful planning, innovative ideas and effective communication.
