why use public art? An objective of South Australia's Waste Strategy 2005-2010 is to foster sustainable behaviour through innovative approaches to education and awareness programs and activities. Compared to other important environmental issues such as water and energy, it is difficult to capture the interest of the community when it comes to waste issues. Therefore, Zero Waste SA has aimed to capture the attention of the community through an innovative idea which will raise awareness and stimulate discussion about zero waste. Public art can communicate important messages in a lasting way. The creative processes provides further opportunities for engagement with people who may not otherwise have thought about zero waste. Other creative projects supported by Zero Waste SA include the EcoTVC national competition which encourages young people to be more aware of environmental issues through the production of a television commercial. The dreamcatcher project for the 2006 Adelaide Fringe promoted the demise of single-use plastic bags using a video installation, postcards, competition and sculptures. |
