About the Collections
Household chemicals can be dangerous if they are not stored
or disposed of safely. Zero Waste SA with the assistance
of Local Government is undertaking free household hazardous
waste collections to help you dispose of your unwanted chemicals
in an environmentally safe way.
Licensed professional waste management contractors will
set up temporary collection points in metropolitan and country
areas of the State (refer to timetable). Householders will
be asked to deliver their unwanted chemicals to the collection
points.
For further information contact;
Zero Waste SA on (+61 8) 8204 1961
What Happens at the Collection?
- Council staff will be there to assist you with directions.
- Remain in your car, unless directed, and trained staff
will unload your chemicals for you.
- Pets and children MUST remain in the car at all times
to ensure their safety.
- No smoking on the site.
- Car engines to be switched off while unloading.
- Licensed professional contractors will manage the segregation,
transport, recycling, treatment and disposal of the waste.
Apart from taking your old chemicals to the collections
you can help the environment by:
- Reducing waste chemicals by only buying the amount you
need or purchasing less hazardous alternatives. Avoid
over purchasing with the thought that it can be used later.
Buying in large quantities is not a bargain if half of
it has to be discarded.
- Reusing leftover chemicals. In most cases the best thing
to do with left over product is to use it all according
to the label instructions or find someone else who can
use it. Inform your family, friends, neighbours or community
groups that you have spare product which is suitable.
It is important however, that banned or restricted pesticides,
old medicines and products whose safety instructions are
no longer readable, are not used or shared.
Remember, it is much better for the environment to reduce
the amount of waste chemicals generated, rather than develop
elaborate and expensive systems to deal with them.

To Help the Collection Team:
- Keep chemicals in their original containers.
- Ensure containers are clearly labelled and well sealed.
Attach your own label if the label has fallen off. Only
label the container if you are sure of the name of the
chemical. Do not guess.
- Do not mix chemicals. Apart from making disposal difficult
you will increase the risk of being exposed to the chemical
and in extreme cases mixing of incompatible chemicals
can lead to a violent chemical reaction such as fire or
explosion.

Safely
Transporting your Chemicals to the Collection
- Transport in the boot of your vehicle or preferably
in a ute or trailer.
- Do not transport in the passenger compartment - a fallen
or leaking container may fill the interior with dangerous
vapour.
- Travel with your car windows down if carrying flammable
or odorous materials.
- Secure containers so they don't fall over or leak.
- Ensure lids are tightly fitted.
- Place containers of liquids in a tray or plastic bucket
so that they do not spill or fall over.
- Pack powders and solids securely.
- Keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away
from poisons.
- Keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all
other materials.
- Protect taps on drums so that the tap does not break
off during transit.
- Avoid transporting open or leaking containers. Put into
another container and make sure you label it.
- Corroded or suspect containers can be placed into another
container, such as a plastic rubbish bin, to act as a
secure overdrum. A bucket can be used for smaller containers.
- Don't transport your chemicals with food, consumer goods,
pets or livestock.
