Review of Solid Waste Landfill Levy
Zero Waste SA undertook an investigation on how an increase could be applied, possible impacts on the community and how the levy might be structured in future years. Click here for the report prepared by Hyder Consulting ( PDF , 1Mb)
The findings of the Hyder report, together with submissions received through the consultation process, has assisted in the determination of the nature of the increase in the levy to be introduced on 1 July 2007. Specifically:
- the metropolitan levy rate will increase to $23.40 and the non-metropolitan levy rate will increase to $11.70
- the current differentiation in the levy rate between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas will remain
- that no differentiation by waste type be made
- that the waste levy continue to apply at the point of disposal
- that 50% of the levy funds will continue to be directed to the Waste to Resources Fund for ZWSA to use in programs to improve waste management and waste minimisation in South Australia.
Zero Waste SA will have regard to the information provided in the Hyder Report, submissions received and other relevant information, including further investigation of the landfill levy and other financial instruments, in developing the next Waste Strategy for South Australia due in 2010.
